Abstract

From last decade, there is tremendous increase in the use of wireless sensor networks (WSNs) in a number of applications like disaster management, battle field surveillance and border security surveillance, etc. In these applications, a huge number of sensor nodes are deployed, which works autonomously. As, the sensor nodes are having a battery which cannot be changed after deployment. These nodes have only limited energy for its operations. A major concern of all WSNs is the need to conserve energy. It is not possible to replace the batteries of a number of dead nodes, the main challenge is to prolong the lifetime of sensor nodes. In this paper the Spare Node Deployment Approach is proposed. Spare node is a node which is redundant in the sensor field, which is selected using spare selection range. LEACH protocol combining with spare node deployment approach is used to implement our technique. It is concluded from Simulation and performance analysis of the proposed technique that using spare node deployment approach there is approximately 10% increase in the lifetime of Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) as compared to using only normal nodes and also redundant data transmission reduces. As a result the energy is saved to enhance the lifetime of wireless sensor network.
